Unleashed & Unhinged
A podcast for dog lovers, dog trainers and dog nerds. I’m Ian Shivers, a behaviour consultant, mentor to other dog professionals, podcaster and all round animal geek. You can find me in Sydney where I run Bondi Behaviourist, a training company that works city wide, Canine C.A.R.E.givers, an online platform for dog owners to learn about training and behaviour, and Mutley, an all in one platform and community with the goal of supporting the amazing professionals in our industry. For some insane reason, as if I wasn’t busy enough I set up this podcast too, in which I’ll dive into a dog topic and unpack it. I hope you enjoy the show.

Like when we talked about humping, growling is probably one of the most missunderstood behaviours our dogs do and as a result... misshandled.

Episode 27: Tim Sampson - Living With a Reactive Dog
Tuesday Nov 28, 2023
Tuesday Nov 28, 2023
Tim Sampson runs All Ears Dog Training in Wellington, New Zealand and is a reactivity specialist.
A qualified trainer, Tim runs classes and individual sessions and brings a lot of fun, play and energy into his work which is just a joy to watch on his instagram account. I love his tag line, "Food is good. Play is better"
In this episode we discussed what it's like living with a reactive dog. Because Tim lives this life, every day. He opens up about the impact it had on his life when an incident occurred and the affects this has had on him since.
Keeping Tim on topic is a challenge at the best of times but it brought so much more to the episode as a result. We ended up bouncing ideas off each other, talking training in general and just having fun.
I loved this episode so jump in, have a listen and give us a like and follow while you're at it.

Episode 25: Mel Ritterman - When Is the Right Time to Get a Dog?
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Mel Ritterman runs Cooper and Kids in and specialising in supporting families with children and their dogs. Based in Melbourne and working remotely across the globe, Mel has become a good friend and someone I ofter defer to when dealing with cases that fall under her area of expertise.
Mel is an IAABC accredited dog trainer, a certified Family Dog Mediator, a Family Paws Educator and a Fear Free Certified Professional. As well as a busy mum of three gorgeous human babies; Harper, Paxton and Brooklyn plus my beautiful golden retrievers, Cooper and Scout
In this episode we discussed 'When is the Right Time to Get a Dog'? I wanted to talk to Mel about this topic because we often bring dogs into our lives as quite an emotional decision and the consequences of this huge decision often impact our lives in ways we never expected. Young families are often impacted more considerably than most.
I loved this episode so jump in, have a listen and give us a like and follow while you're at it.

Episode 24: Canine Caregivers - Management Isn’t Cheating
Thursday Nov 16, 2023
Thursday Nov 16, 2023
Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode.
In this episode we discuss "Management Isn't Cheating".
First of all, I'll explain that when we're talking about management here, we're talking about the use of baby gates, not going to the park when we know that dog our dog doesn't like will be there, closing the door to the balcony so they don't bark - that kinda thing.
This type of managment often gets a bad wrap. People feeling judged that 'they didn't train their dog - they just managed it'. These feelings are not helpful and often we forget that when it comes to our own life, we manage a lot of our own shit rather than fully addressing it. If it's good enough for us, then it can be good enough for our own dogs.
As ever, I won't spoil it by giving away the answers here. So... Dive in, have a listen and if you want to learn more about Canine Caregivers, a platform in which we provide courses and webinars on how to live a healthy and happy life with your dog, visit caninecaregivers.com.au because we've got a ton of resources available.

Episode 23: Bobbie Bhambree - The Resilience Rainbow
Tuesday Nov 14, 2023
Tuesday Nov 14, 2023
Bobbie Bhambree (CDBC, CPDT-KA) is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant at Behavior Vets. She is also a faculty member of CATCH Canine Trainers Academy and Agility University. Bobbie started her career in 2003 as a pet behavior counselor with the ASPCA Animal Behavior Center.
Bobbie works as part of the Behavior Vets team and is a presenter on the Resilience Rainbow tour, educating caregivers and professionals on what resilience is, how to build and of course, why.
So, when Bobbie talks about reslience in our dogs, I listen. Resilience is one of these topics that's quite fashionable for dog trainers to talk about lately, but in my opinion it is about time. I have spoken a lot in the past about the importance of emotional stability, and resilience is a huge component of that.
So, listen in and let us know what you think.
Bobbie's is next presenting as the key note speaker with Dr Kathy Murphy at the L.E.G.S. in Motion Conference on the 5th December. To learn more about this event, other upcoming events and other resources follow the links below.

Thursday Nov 09, 2023
Thursday Nov 09, 2023
Dominique Hone of Canine Caregivers joins me again for another Canine Caregivers episode.
In this episode we discuss "Should Overstimulated Dogs Be In Dog Parks?".
We see them there all the time, because they're 'high energy', right? But should they be there? What alternatives are there?
As ever, I won't spoil it by giving away the answers here. So... Episode 21: Dr Findy Wills - Emotional Regulation
Tuesday Nov 07, 2023
Tuesday Nov 07, 2023
Dr Findy Wills started as a small animal veterinarian in Newcastle after graduating from the University of Sydney with first class honours. She has been servicing the area for the past 14 years. She is currently based in Central Coast and is enjoying everything the region has to offer. During her time as a small animal clinician, she found her clients were often in need of answers for their pets' behaviour problems. Seeing first-hand the end result of untreated mental health disorders in animals sparked her commitment to further her studies in animal behaviour with the University of Edinburgh, UK in 2017. She currently holds a Masters degree in Clinical Animal Behaviour and has a particular interest in human-animal relationships and trauma-informed care. ollow the links below to learn more and to learn more about the show itself.
I personally got the pleasure of meeting Dr Wills at a conference in Sydney and instantly gravitated towards her approach. We have since worked together and shared ideas and the more I did the more I realised how much this incredible person has to bring our industry.
In this episode we discuss both of our approaches to supporting our clients and their dogs, emotional reulgation being at the core of what we are both trying to achieve.
Dr Findy Wills is currently the resident behaviour veterinarian for Lets Talk Paws based in the Central Coast of NSW and works as an advisor and with behavioural cases for the RSPCA. To learn more about her work and the show itself, follow the links below.
